December is such a weird month when you make your own money.

Half your brain is trying to finish client projects and chase down those end-of-year “Hey, just bumping this to the top of your inbox 👀” invoices.

The other half is daydreaming about a calmer, more hopeful year to come. That’s what this month’s newsletter is built around: giving you clarity before the year ends.

Below is a simple, 5-step Year-End Money Reset designed specifically for freelancers, creatives, contractors and anyone whose income doesn’t come in the form of a neat, predictable paycheck. This is the guide I wished I had during my first year as a freelancer. Now I lean on these steps every December to stay focused, feel light, and remain steady on the path of buidling wealth with irregular income.

Let’s go.

🔶 Your 5-Step Year-End Money Reset

(Five steps. Five minutes each. And you’ll feel so much better walking into 2026.)

Think of this as a clean kitchen counter for your money life.

Open one desktop folder and name it “2025 Income.” Drag in every paid invoice and payment confirmation from the year. Cross-check your records by combing through your bank statements for the full year.

Why this matters: It clears mental clutter, speeds up tax prep, and gives you a sense of completion.

Quick reflection:
What were your top 3 revenue drivers this year? Anything surprise you?

If you don’t already have a 2025 profit and loss spreadsheet, start one now.

Make each month a column heading and add up your paid income for the year.
Subtract your expenses (aka “losses”).
Look at the number that remains.

That’s your real profit for 2025.

Why this matters: Freelancers often under- or over-estimate their wins. This check-in grounds you in facts, not feelings. When you’re working with facts, you know which projects and people you should focus on for the year to come.

Quick reflection:
Does this number match how your 2025 felt?

Inflation isn’t playing around. You also built skills this year that deserve to be reflected in what you’re earning.

Adjust your 2026 rates accordingly.

Why this matters: Most freelancers undercharge for too long. A 5–10% increase can help you keep up with what you actually need to live and help you stay motivated next year.

Quick reflection:
Which rate do I never want to say out loud again?

January is a weird month if you work for yourself, too.

Payments get delayed. Clients are quiet. Your buffer protects you from feeling panicky when your emails are going unreturned.

Rebuild your buffer from any hits it took during the holiday season with your end-of-year invoices. If you’re just getting started, transfer an automatic percentage (10% is ideal) of each check to build one up.

Why this matters: It turns slow weeks into “annoying,” not “scary.”

Quick reflection:
What is the number saved that would help me breathe easier in January?

This is the heart of the reset.

Your Money Why is your north star — the reason you care about money at all.
It gives your goals meaning and keeps you grounded when you hit income bumps, unpredictable working rhythms or some trinket you really really want to buy but don’t really really need.

Examples of Money Whys:

  • More time for real creative work

  • A house down payment

  • Early retirement

  • Funding a dream project

  • Breaking a cycle of financial stress

Quick reflection:
What “why” is powerful enough to keep my eye on the prize in 2026?

📣 If this reset helped you…
